Most companies that call us have the same situation: a ColdFusion application that’s been running for a decade or more, a team that’s stretched thin, and a list of things that need to happen to the codebase before someone at board level notices how much risk is sitting there. Sometimes it’s a server still running Windows 2008. Sometimes the original developer left in 2017 and nobody has touched the authentication module since. Sometimes it’s a compliance deadline that just became real.

New builds are less common than people expect. When someone calls us saying they need a new system, we spend the first 20 minutes trying to figure out if that’s actually true. Half the time it isn’t. What they need is for the existing system to do two or three things it currently doesn’t. When a new build is genuinely the answer, ColdFusion moves fast. Most of the complexity in these projects lives in the business rules and the data model. The interface is the easy part. We don’t write a line of application code until everyone has agreed on a technical requirements document. Clients push back on this sometimes. In 25 years, the ones who skip it consistently spend twice as long fixing things that one meeting would have caught.

The more common request is: the back-end has been solid for ten years, but the interface looks like 2009 and the team is embarrassed to demo it. We build a RESTful API layer over the existing ColdFusion back-end and put a React, Angular, or Vue.js front-end on top. The business logic stays exactly where it is. We’ve done this for applications ranging from small internal tools used by five people to customer platforms with over 100,000 daily active users.

Performance work is one of the most satisfying things we do because the results are immediate and specific. Clients expect a long list of small fixes. What they actually get is a short list of big ones. Nine times out of ten, one or two queries are doing most of the damage: an N+1 pattern in a CFLoop, a query against a table that’s grown from 100,000 rows to 40 million since anyone last looked at the indexes. We’ve seen an eight-second page load drop to under one second from a single query change.

Server and version upgrades come up constantly. Running ColdFusion 10 on Windows Server 2008 is a compound risk: unsupported CF version, unsupported OS, years of published CVEs sitting in production. We handle the whole exercise together: CF version, server OS, JVM, IIS, datasource migration. We start with a pre-upgrade assessment, run a parallel staging environment, and do a planned cutover with a rollback window. The upgrade that goes wrong is almost always the one that started without a compatibility audit.

Security is standard in everything we build, not a line item. The most common problem we find when we audit CF applications: CFQUERYPARAM is on every query, so somebody assumed the application was safe from SQL injection. CFQUERYPARAM with the wrong cfsqltype doesn’t protect you. The database casts the parameter instead of parameterising it, and the vulnerability is back. Automated scanners miss this entirely. Our architects catch it at the cfsqltype level.
